This is the revealing portrait of a prolific singer, songwriter, and performer of country music. Mega country music hits like "City Lights" (Ray Price), "Tips of My Fingers" (Roy Clark, Eddy Arnold, Steve Wariner), "Once a Day" (Connie Smith), "Saginaw, Michigan" (Lefty Frizzell), and many more flowed from his pen, making him one of the most decorated songwriters in music history.
Then he came to a point in his career when he questioned if what he had to say mattered anymore. Music Row had changed, a new generation of artists and songwriters had transformed the genre, and the Country Music Hall of Fame member and Grand Ole Opry star was no longer relevant. By 1990, he stopped writing. Bad investments left him near bankruptcy, and his marriage was falling apart. In Nashville, he was a museum piece_seen only as a nostalgia act. Anderson was only in his 50s when he assumed he had climbed all the mountains he was intended to scale. But Anderson, a product of a long-gone Nashville, worked to reinvent himself, and this biography documents Anderson's 50-plus-year career_a career he once thought unattainable.
Today, thanks to the support of musical peers and friends who believed in him, he continues to forge the path of lyrical integrity in music, harnessing his ability to craft a song that tells a familiar story, grabs you by the heart, and moves you. Anderson is the only songwriter in country music history to have a song on the charts in each of the past seven consecutive decades. A six-time winner of the Song of the Year Award and recipient of the BMI Icon Award, he has taken home many CMA and ACM Award trophies and garnered multiple Grammy Award nominations.
With anecdotes of Anderson interacting with the superstars of American music, including such legends as Patsy Cline, Vince Gill, and Steve Wariner, this book highlights Anderson's trajectory in the business and his influence on the past, present, and future of the genre.
Includes bonus music tracks.
Whisperin’ Bill Anderson An Unprecedented Life in Country Music (Audible Audio Edition) Bill Anderson Peter Cooper Books
Refers to the audio version - Loved the book, 99% of which is read by Mr. Anderson himself which made it feel more like a personal history. Not the type of book where you'll read about someone throwing others under the bus, which personally gave me a great deal of pleasure! I've read too many books like that and they greatly take away from the whole. Great deal of honesty in the book as he wasn't shy about talking about his failures in life, but his overall optimism was pleasing to the ear. What I never knew was his great song-writing ability, more hits that I imagined and he describes how those hits were written. The MP3 version has a bonus track of him singing a few of his more famous songs, including his versions of songs written for other artists so I found that interesting. These bonus tracks appear to be acoustical versions so you'll hear a different version of his own hits Poor Folks and City Lights, Tips of my Fingers, etc. Overall, well worth the cost!Product details

Whisperin’ Bill Anderson An Unprecedented Life in Country Music (Audible Audio Edition) Bill Anderson Peter Cooper Books Reviews
The case stated there was a bonus CD track of music included. But there wasn’t one. I feel cheated. Won’t buy from this party again. Not too sure it was new, as advertised. Too bad I had to select a star to be able to add my review. Not sure it deserved 1 Star.
Tells an interesting and honest account of Bill Anderson's life in country music centering more on the business end rather than his personal like. It is an easy read. It is not a tell-all kind of book, and it's purpose is not to hurt anyone. It is more serious with a little humor.
Whisperin' Bill has a way with words in song but also in book form. He also has a great sense of humor & wit. Being a native Georgian I am very familiar with the Ga towns mentioned in this book(one being my hometown) and with a son who is a UGA alum, this book had a very "down home" feel for me. I thoroughly enjoyed this book & highly recommend it.
The best book I could have chosen for my first audio book. Having 10 hours of Bill Anderson personally tell you about his life is the best 10 hours a person can have.
"Whispering" Bill Anderson is a very nice guy. And he's written a very nice autobiography. It's low key, much like himself, but it very nicely tells about how he got started, his travels, and his continued success on the roads of Country and Popular Music.
I've read biographies on about a dozen of the old-time country music stars and this one might be my favorite. Bill Anderson tells the story of his life and career in an informative and entertaining way, not pulling many punches but not besmirching anyone's name either. Reading the account was very much like sitting in a room with Bill and listening to him tell stories over coffee to start with and then a beer as the day goes on. I thoroughly enjoyed this, could hardly put it down, and highly recommend it for fans of good ol' country music.
Bill Anderson's story is the story of Country Music with the ups and downs, joy & pain and laughter & tears. It is the story of a man who has given his life to the music he loves. If you are a fan of Country Music and Bill Anderson, this book belongs in your library.
